A few years ago, when I was still an assistant principal at a middle school, I received an office referral for a student who had not ever been in trouble before at school.
Of course, after talking with the student, his peers & teachers, it was my task to call his mother. I informed her of the situation & scheduled a meeting.  Needless to say, she wasn't the least bit happy.
As we started the meeting, I allowed her to vent (asked that she not use profanity) & I deeply listened. Her son had never been in trouble at school in his life, until now. It had to be the school or the teachers or something else: it couldn't possibly be her son's choices. By this time tears were rolling down her face.
After patiently listening, & offering her tissues, it was my turn to talk. I informed her that usually around 5th grade children begin to change emotionally & psychologically as a normal part of development. I was a 5th grade teacher for many years an had observed many students entering this developmental change. Her son was 12 & was just being a normal preteen with hormones raging. I explained that the issue is usually elevated when parents won't or don't know how to PIVOT as the children develop more in these areas.
As parents, we generally want to use the same methodology, expecting the same results, even though the child's psyche has changed. 
That's where Parenting911 comes in.  As the Parenting911 Coach, I'm on a rescue mission to help parents PIVOT, so the relationships remain strong, the power struggle is limited & unnecessary.  
Well, the next week, that mom called me because now she was noticing a different behavior at home. She thanked me for helping to open her eyes & we began a journey of learning how to PIVOT with her son's developmental stages.
